John Webber (dubbed Johnny Bunter, cousin of Billy),
Executive Director of the Packaging Council, bravely
donned scruffy school-boy attire to give the PAC-IT
workshop a light-hearted flavour. In contrast,
Deb Statham (inset) behind the camera was 'prim' in
her gym frock and ankle socks. Joe (back), the delightful
bus driver entered into the spirit of the day parking
the bus at a peaceful, sunny spot alongside Hamilton's
lake. The group tucked into their school lunches,
assessing the packaging and completing their workshop
exercise before heading off to Cryovac Sealed Air for
a t site tour of that plant.

Tony Mander (standing),
author of PAC-IT, flew in from Christchurch to run the
workshop. Tony explains the workshop elements, PACKAGING
: A SOLUTION, NOT A PROBLEM and outlines how 'packaging'
could be used as a context to introduce elements of
environmental education together with elements of technology,
science, social studies etc.
Teachers then raided
their lunchboxes, munching as they assessed the packaging
surrounding the industry-sponsored goodies inside.
All agreed that a classroom
'lunchbox packaging assessment" was a great way
to cover a range of curricula and caters for all age
groups: see Packaging:
a starting point for environmental issues)
